Moments of Dignity and Places with a Soul

It's Saturday morning, and I'm off to a good start. It's been a productive morning, so I thought I'd take a break and watch some YouTube. I looked through the New York Encounter archives to find some inspiration.

New York Encounter is an annual three-day public cultural event in New York City. As it says on their about page: "Through a vast array of conferences, artistic performances, and exhibits, The Encounter is both a dwelling place and a point of departure for men and women wishing to live fully and to promote a society of truth and love."

I had the opportunity to volunteer as a photographer for this event in 2015. I hope to return. There is no event like it!

One of the exhibits at the 2018 New York Encounter was "Moments of Dignity and Places with a Soul" by Joseph H.H. Weiler. Weiler is a professor at the New York University School of Law. And he is now my photographer role model!

In his exhibit video he says of his exhibition, "That is the invitation: in every place that is represented in my photographs, I invite you to look and search for the interaction of the human subject with the topography, with the geography, with the place that is being photographed, and look for the soul of the place in that interaction." This is exactly what I try to do with my photography!

In the video Weiler discusses some of his photos, including this striking image of the Cathedral of Milan as reflected in a McDonald's window, where sitting in a corner of the restaurant is a woman in contemplation, reminiscent of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks.

I think this photo should be in a famous museum somewhere, but I could only find it online on one page. Enjoy!
