Marelle Beams Sunshine at the Lagunitas Sanctuary
July 18, 2018
It was a simmering July day in the North Bay last Wednesday, the perfect weather for hanging out with friends at the Lagunitas Taproom & Beer Sanctuary in Petaluma, listening to live music while enjoying a cold IPA straight from the onsite production line.
The magic at Lagunitas begins at 4:20 PM. I mean the magic of music! That's when bands take the stage in the Beer Sanctuary. This week, vocalist Marelle took the stage, aglow in late afternoon sunshine, with a guitarist and drummer for a full trio sound.
My friends and I went specifically to see Marelle. With a personality like a golden ray sunshine like that sunshine she likes to bask in, judging by her golden tan and sun-bleached hair, Marelle put on a brilliant set.
Marelle, a Sonoma County local, belted soulful covers and originals from the sanctuary stage, as guests enjoyed camaraderie and ales under the shady canopy of the sanctuary on that sultry summer afternoon. It was a full house. All the varnished wooden picnic tables were full of patrons and topped with colorful fare to compliment the variety of ales served with them. Two of those tables were taken by me and my friends and acquaintances.
Marelle recently sang the National Anthem in front of thousands at Red, White, and Boom, voted Sonoma County's best 4th of July fireworks display. I happened to be there. While my friend and I couldn't afford to pay the entry fee to the fairgrounds venue, we got the best view of the fireworks across the street in the parking lot, near the detonation site. Although our view of Marelle was obstructed, Marelle's voice carried beautifully. I was happy we got to hear her once again, and actually see her on stage at Lagunitas.
Whether patriotic anthems, classic rock, great American standards, or R&B, Marelle can sing it and she adds her own sweet and soulful R&B flavor to it. She definitely did justice to Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill (whose album 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill I had recently brought out of my music archive (i.e. Mom's house). Indeed, Marelle's originals have a dreamy R&B pop quality to them. So far, only a few originals are published on YouTube, but rumor has it, an EP or album is currently being recorded.
As the setting sun illuminated the sanctuary stage in vibrant golden hues, young professionals, young children, and the young at heart enjoyed the final songs of Marelle's set.
